First, it turned out to be a great riding day with easy
terrain and a great view of the St. Lawrence River and its mountains. Second, today
was a short day which was great because I was on galley duty that evening. I
cycled with Louise, Becky, and Mary.
We took a break in Notre-Dame du Portage. Before we entered
the village we noticed the road was closed off; however, we did not see why it
would closed off. So we decided to chance it and cycle down the road. Very
quickly we realized the road closure was definitely justified. The road through
the village was going through some significant construction. The entire road
was dug up; however, rather than go back and take Route 132 around the village
we got off our bikes and walked through the construction site. It seemed several
riders had done so as the construction workers were not surprised to see us;
they even helped us with our bikes as we walked through.
In the village we noticed a building had a sign that said
Café and so we decided to stop for a cup of coffee. When we walked in we
realized the Café was a woman’s home. The front room of her home acted as a
sitting area and her kitchen was where she made the coffee, tea, hot chocolate,
etc and treats. She was quite flustered with us because she did not anticipate
a group of people stopping for a drink. We all ordered and it took awhile for
her to complete our order, but it was still enjoyable. As a result of the delay
we had to pick up the pace a bit because Mary, Louise and I were on galley
duty.
Along the way we met up with Mike. Mike and I split up from
Louise, Mary and Becky in Trois Pistoles because we wanted to make a quick stop
to a bakery Bud recommended. Unfortunately we did not find that particular
bakery, but we ended up stopping at another bakery with Gee and Larry and had
some drinks and homemade donuts which were incredibly yummy.
Despite the café stop I made it to camp in plenty of time to
get dinner going with my galley crew and serve a yummy meal :)
