The day turned out to be a bit
windy, overcast, with scattered showers. The route took us a bit inland and so
there would be no coastal views. The day was not so eventful except for when I
reached Miramichi.
To get into the city we had to go
over a high bridge that was not cyclist friendly. There was no bicycle path on
the road and if I was to cycle on the sidewalk my bicycle seat would almost be parallel
to the top of the hand railing. As such, if I swerved, there was a huge gust of
wind, or something along those lines, I feared I would find myself falling over
the bridge and that would be the end of me. So I decided it was best to walk
over the bridge. It’s amusing that walking can be quite frustrating after
having cycled because it is a significantly slower means of transportation and
so it felt like eons were going by as I crossed the bridge.
As we cycled out of Miramichi
Louise, Mary, Mike, and I stopped for lunch on a curbside. There we met a man
named Bunny. Bunny just saw us sitting there and decided to stop for a chat. With
him he carried an envelope containing photocopies of a poem about the city of
Miramichi. He gave us several copies to give to our group. Later, as we were
back on the saddle and turning onto Route 11 we noticed a van had stopped on
the side of the road. Lo and behold it was Bunny. He had gone back home and
then drove out to meet us because he wanted to offer us Canada pins to give to
our international riders. It was incredibly nice of him. Once again, another random
but pleasant experience.
Soon enough we were at camp. That
evening we were having fresh lobster for dinner, a traditional meal in New
Brunswick. Luckily Larry was on galley duty as he was one of our better cooks
and so he would cook the lobster well. Also, it was the first time I ever had
lobster and so I was extra glad that Larry was the chef for the evening :) We
also had a visit from a couple who did the tour in 2008. They had just begun an
organic farm and came with some tasty dishes made with garden fresh
ingredients. It was yummy :)
