Banff to Airdrie, 145km: Goodbye Rockies, Hello Prairies

Today we said goodbye to the Rockies and hello to the prairies. I cycled with Louise again. I had been cycling with her for the majority of the tour thus far so it appeared I found my cycling buddy :D

It was strange leaving the mountains. We just left them to disappear in the distance as we rode into the land of rolling farmland. This transition put it into perspective how much we actually cycle in a day. We began in the mountains and by the end of the day we could not see them in the distance, it was quite an incredible realization.

When Louise and I officially left the Rockies we took a photo signifying our accomplishment. We cycled through the Rocky Mountains, what an achievement!

The rolling hills following the mountains were a challenge because the distance between hills was too large for the downhill momentum of the first hill to assist you up the second hill, but it was still fun going down those hills :)

Louise and I decided to stop in Cochrane for a Dairy Queen (DQ) break because it ended up being the hottest day we experienced during the tour, which obviously called for ice cream :) We were not alone in thinking an ice cream break would be a good cool-down as we met up with Erik, Rob, Becky, Rene-Lise, Jacques and Alain at DQ.

After our DQ break we just puttered our way to Airdrie, taking it easy due to the heat. In Airdrie we did not end up staying at a campsite, rather we camped in a soccer field. Navigating our way to the field was difficult. There were several turns and streets with similar names. However, we made it which was a relief because it was warm and all we wanted to do was take a shower and not move :) The next day the temperature would drop a bit as we headed into Dinosaur Valley.
